Smiths Falls Welcomes Ukraine knows that our strength lies not only in the words we stand by, but most importantly through the actions we take to help people in need. We realized that by working together we could help Ukrainians overcome their challenges much more efficiently, and that is why we ultimately decided to launch Smiths Falls Welcomes Ukraine.

We need our Community to know that we are here. In response to the Russian war against the Ukrainian people, a small group of us decided to prepare Smiths Falls for receiving families displaced by the conflict. Our Smiths Falls Welcomes Ukraine Committee has grown to include passionate members of our community, qualified in a wide range of skills. In fairness, none of us have ever done this before, and the work has been hard. Our plan is to do this right and anticipate all needs as displaced Ukrainians settle into the Smiths Falls region.

Ukrainains Need Our Help

This conflict is only two month old. Since WW2, there is no war that has displaced more people in such a short span of time, not even close. We have all read the news. There are over 4 million Ukrainians that have been forced to leave their country for safety. These are mainly women and children and the elderly. Men we know are largely required to fight. Just in the capital Warsaw, Poland alone there are over 1 million refugees. Within the Ukraine, some 6 million people are without homes. We as a Committee see the urgency to be ready to step up and lead an effort to get people here safely and help them start a new life if they choose to. Our Town will benefit enormously from being a part of these people’s generational story. – Not unlike when my folks were welcomed to Canada after WW2 from Poland, and with hard work, it all worked out well for them.
